This is how a contemporary described the performance of Laura Peperara, the enigmatic star of the 16th-century women's ensemble Concerto delle donne at the court of Ferrara. A true cult of the madrigal arose around the singer: composers such as Giaches de Wert, Luca Marenzio, and Luzzasco Luzzaschi idolized her voice and wrote especially for her.
