Dialogos

Was Notre-Dame in Paris the place where the earliest polyphony originated? Not exactly. Take Winchester Cathedral, 964. The canons are kicked out, monks take over. What follows is a clash of voices: who may sing, who must remain silent? Ensemble Dialogos highlights that turning point with music from the Winchester Troparium: a collection like a chronicle of war, revealing how early polyphony wriggles free from Gregorian chant: raw, virtuosic, and unpredictable.

It combines new musicological research with an innovative approach, which lends the repertoire a theatrical and expressive dimension.

Croatian singer Katarina Livljanić is one of the foremost specialists in the field of the medieval song and plainchant performance. Livljanić codirects a medieval music master programme at the Sorbonne in Paris and teaches vocal music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. She studied singing and musicology in France. With her ensemble Dialogos she has created many different productions based around medieval chant and liturgical theatre, which have earned her international renown. In 2023, Livljanić was co-curator during Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.
