On Tuesday 1 September, ĀRT HOUSE 17 & Friends will be performing in the Grote Zaal at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Expect a festive performance in which artistic disciplines and musical genres come together. The programme combines music by Bach, Handel, Bertali, Schmelzer and Vivaldi with modern tracks such as ‘Mystery of Love’ by Sufjan Stevens and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz. Everything will be performed on period instruments, just as it was in the Baroque era.
In Baroque opera, gender roles were often fluid: men sang female roles, women sang male roles, and castrati sang everything in between. ĀRT HOUSE 17 carries on this tradition in a flamboyant performance in which genres and conventions cheerfully clash and merge. For ‘Over the Rainbow’, some 170 singers from The Space Choir take to the stage alongside dancers, clowns and acrobats. This extraordinary concert is an ode to freedom, diversity and being true to yourself.
