ĀRT HOUSE 17 & Friends
On the Baroque opera stage, gender boundaries were surprisingly blurred. Men sang women’s roles, women sang men’s, and castrati sang everything in between. ÀRT HOUSE 17 continues in this vein with a flamboyant revue where genres and conventions cheerfully clash. Music by Bach, Handel, Bertali, Schmelzer, and Vivaldi stands fraternally alongside Sufjan Stevens' Mystery of Love and Somewhere over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz – all played on historical instruments.
The dance is directed by leading Antwerp choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, while the stage action features around 170 members of the inclusive Space Choir and a host of clowns, dancers, and acrobats. This concert format, anything but ordinary, is an ode to the beauty of diversity.
With an introduction by Annelies Andries (19:15 hrs, in Dutch) and a Q&A session (after the concert, in English), both taking place in the Fentener van Vlissingen Foyer (limited capacity)
