Wake-up Service, 25 August 2024

Good morning! Today is Day 3 of Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2024. On this Sunday, we start early, with perhaps the youngest musicians on the programme. Around ten children aged between 9 and 14 wake up the city today with their bell ringing from the Dom Tower in the Manual Bell Ringing Workshop.

A recap

Yesterday was the first full festival day, which also saw the start of fringe programming throughout the city. La Tempête, artist in residence of 2023, stimulated all the senses in TivoliVredenburg's Great Hall, challenging early music lovers by juxtaposing medieval music with twentieth-century works by Ohana and Stravinsky. Koert Debeuf gave his first in a series of four lectures, and ART HOUSE 17 combined dance, theatre and early music as ever in their new performance ¡Olé!

Today: Café con Raquel

New this year are the Cafés. What does the brand-new festival day have in store? How did yesterday's headliners taste? Every day, get together in TivoliVredenburg's Het Gegeven Paard at 10:00 for a talk show on the RABO Open Stage. Each day, different guests will join us for a conversation among kindred spirits. A place of meeting and conversation.

Yesterday, the first Café already took place, led by Saskia Törnqvist. Jed Wentz (artistic advisor of the festival), Koert Debeuf and Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel discussed the festival theme Seville and various concerts. Missed it? Don't worry, we've only just started! From today until the last festival day, there are eight more Cafés, all led by Spanish soprano Raquel Andueza.

Visit Café con Raquel every morning from 10:00 to 10:30 at Het Gegeven Paard (TivoliVredenburg). The perfect start to the festival day, and a lovely way to gently ease into the 11:00am concert.

Tip from the team: María Cristina Kiehr & Ariel Abramovich

Every year, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht is also a feast for the people behind the scenes. Our crew members are happy to share their concert tips! With today's tip from editor Marjolein, who can't wait for María Cristina Kiehr & Ariel Abramovich's concert.

'I always find the last concerts on the day, at 22:30, magical. During the day, there is all sorts of things to do: several concerts at once, socialising in festival centre TivoliVredenburg, a mix of festival-goers and shoppers in the city centre... Very nice, but sometimes a bit overwhelming. I am therefore very much looking forward to Ariel Abramovich and María Cristina Kiehr's concert. The city is deserted, peace is restored, and an angelic voice and beautiful vihuela playing can be heard in the beautiful Pieterskerk... An absolute must: a feeling of atmosphere that stays with you forever and that I long for every year!’

Composer of the day: Francisco de Peñalosa

The time has finally come to highlight one of Seville's key figures. Composer Francisco de Peñalosa (c. 1470-1528) belongs to the first generation of Spanish polyphonists. His regular appearance on the programme is partly due to the fact that an awful lot of his works have survived, more than of his contemporaries.

Peñalosa therefore had a very active life. He was born in the province of Toledo. Unfortunately, that is all we know about his youth: Peñalosa's name does not appear in a document until 1498, when he was appointed to the royal chapel of Aragon by King Ferdinand II. Later, he also worked at the papal chapel in Rome, as well as being chapel master in Burgos. But in the end, it was the cathedral of Seville where he spent the most and longest time.

Peñalosa was a jack of all trades, at least for his time. He wrote masses, several settings of the Magnificat, motets, and hymns. Besides religious works, 11 secular compositions of his have also survived.

That Josquin Desprez was Peñalosa's greatest inspiration can be heard from the very similar stylistic choices. For years it was even claimed that the motet Sancta mater istud agas was written by Josquin, rather than Peñalosa. This one of the motets that Cantica Symphonia plays today, interspersed with the mass Adieu mes amours. The latter work shows even more clearly how much Peñalosa appreciated Josquin and took him as an example: he based it on the Franco-Flemish master's chanson of the same name.

Also on the programme today...

... a journey around the world, a journey to Jerusalem and the Friends concert.
