Ensemble Leones

Oswald von Wolkenstein was not a poet who coloured inside the lines. In his texts, verses about courtly love collide with hearty travel tales and raw humour. In his music, monophony heads toward a clash with early polyphony. Ensemble Leones places the music in its native landscape: the Dolomites, where myths, echoes, and memories are trapped between the mountain peaks. From legends and songs emerges the portrait of a singer who proves to be remarkably contemporary six centuries later.

About the performers

Ensemble Leones, founded in 2008, focuses its attention exclusively on medieval music. Research enables the ensemble to present reconstructions and arrangements of repertoire that has been hidden for ages – for example, songs by the German Minnesinger Neidhart von Reuental and the poet and composer Oswald von Wolkenstein. Leones regularly collaborates with soloists such as Andreas Scholl and Benjamin Bagby. The musicians also perform with many other ensembles, including Ensemble Gilles Binchois, the Ferrara Ensemble and The Earle His Viols.
