Bone in the Throat / Krop in de Keel

Expo installation Graindelavoix on Domplein

Nothing is more intimate than the voice. And yet that voice seems detached from the body from which it originates. We hear our own voice distorted, while the voices of others enchant and confuse us. A voice is never enough or just too much. It charms and seduces, it shifts from sweet-sounding to terrifying siren’s call. It is the immediate now, in which the abyss of the past suddenly looms. Nothing is more unheimlich than the voice: an unapproachable, untouchable Fremdkörper that penetrates us and makes our desires run wild.

Music seems to find its essence in the voice. Why, then, should we try to tame that voice? Why do we constantly keep it in line and force it into the straitjacket of sublime beauty?

Something always escapes from the voice, as if it can never be fully defined. The voice is simultaneously an invocation and a swan song, life and transience. This audiovisual installation explores exactly how that works. Open daily from 10:00 AM at the Domplein.
