Ensemble Castelkorn

Tapping feet, clicking heels, swirling skirts: with the dance music of Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, you imagine yourself in the blink of an eye at the court of Vienna, where dance is not a pastime but a form of conversation. Schmelzer's music is rhetoric made sound, with gavottes, gigues, and ciacconas as coded gestures, that are full of character and meaning. Ensemble Castelkorn tackles the repertoire with verve and daring – everyone onto the dancefloor!

About the performers

Founded by Josef Žák in 2016 in Paris, Ensemble Castelkorn explores the musical treasures of Central Europe, particularly Bohemia and Moravia. The main source of its repertoire is the musical collection of Bishop Liechtenstein-Castelkorn in Kroměříž, one of the largest 17th-century music collections in Central Europe. The ensemble won the Diapason d'Or for their CD Labyrinth Garden (2024) and regularly performs at major baroque festivals in France and abroad. The ensemble is artist in residence during Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2026.
