Tenebrae Choir
Forget the keys. William Byrd also wrote for the voice – and how! In an England where Catholic masses were forbidden, the Mass for Five Voices and the motet Infelix ego were allowed to be heard only in closed settings. The music speaks volumes: Byrd’s polyphony is always restrained but never neutral. Voices seek each other out, hold back, build tension without exploding. Tenebrae exposes that tension with almost clinical precision: every line counts, every breath carries weight.
