Ayrton, Coolen & Zipperling
What can you do with a single long note? Embellish it, thought the Renaissance man, and he improvised away. Diminutions and divisions transformed simple tunes with scales, leaps, and ornaments. Saskia Coolen, Rainer Zipperling, and artist-in-residence Patrick Ayrton are masters of this game. In Passaggiata, they start with music by Ortiz, Coprario, and Selma y Salaverde. Where the score ends, imagination begins.
