Ensemble Odyssee

Can you imitate trumpets, drums, or shepherd’s flutes? If your name is Michel Pignolet de Montéclair, the answer is ‘yes’! His Sérénade ou concert (1697) is playful sound theatre in which instruments disguise themselves and imitate one another. Recorders, oboes, and strings effortlessly switch roles in minuets, gavottes, and pastoral dances. Ensemble Odyssee connects Montéclair’s music with the work of Jean-Féry Rebel, resulting in a Baroque masquerade full of echoes, mirror images, and sound illusions.

Ensemble Odyssee - Theater zonder stemmen (Wednesday 2 September 15:00, TivoliVredenburg / Hertz)

Sometimes music is more than just listening; it’s seeing with your ears. This concert by Ensemble Odyssee promises to be a wonderful baroque musical sleight of hand. What I find so fascinating is that the musicians play with your ears. You hear a trumpet sounding or a drum beating, but on stage you see only recorders, oboes and strings imitating these sounds. It is an inventive game of disguises and echoes in which the instruments constantly swap roles. For me, this is the ultimate proof that Baroque music doesn’t have to be stuffy, but can actually be full of humour and surprise. Will you come and experience how the ‘special effects’ of the Baroque can fool you?

About the performers

The core members of Amsterdam-based Ensemble Odyssee are Eva Saladin (violin), Anna Stegmann (recorder), Georg Fritz (oboe) and Andrea Friggi (harpsichord). The young Baroque ensemble performs early music in various formations, from chamber music to orchestra. Their first CDs have been devoted to unknown Neapolitan repertoire from the seventeenth century, and they have also recorded music by Woodcock, Babell and Ariosti. As a chamber music ensemble Odyssee has been a prize-winner at the International Van Wassenaer Competition.
