L'Achéron

Versailles is bathed in darkness, but the Sun King is still awake. In a room next to the royal sleeping quarters, Marin Marais lets his beloved viola da gamba sing nocturnal confessions: lamenting, tender, seductive. François Joubert-Caillet and L’Achéron selected pieces from Marais’s royal catalogue in which the viola da gamba best approximates the human voice: from the sweet-voiced La Rêveuse and the legendary Les voix humaines, through mournful tombeaux, to the dizzying Labyrinthe.

About the performers

L’Achéron, founded in 2009 by viol player François Joubert-Caillet, takes its name from the mythological river crossed by Orpheus. The ensemble seeks to bridge contrasting worlds – past and present, life and death, idealism and reality – through early music. Committed to accessibility without compromise, L’Achéron explores the richness of Renaissance and Baroque instruments and genres, forging a close connection with audiences through expressive, historically informed performances.
