Gabrieli Consort & Players
Step back into Venice in 1595: a city of canals, masks and power. In the famous Basilica of St Mark’s, Marino Grimani is crowned Doge, the political head of the Venetian Republic. Such an impressive ceremony called for equally impressive music.
This programme features festive toccatas and canzonas by Bendinelli and Giovanni Gabrieli, interspersed with a solemn mass by Andrea Gabrieli. Choirs and instrumental groups respond to one another from different points in the space, so that the music literally comes from all sides.
This coronation music was intended to overwhelm and move the audience. Even today, it remains an impressive total experience, full of grandeur and rich sound.
Also live on www.emtv.online.
With an introduction by Annelies Andries (19:15 hrs, in Dutch) and a Q&A session (after the concert, in English), both taking place in the Fentener van Vlissingen Foyer (limited capacity)
