Welcome to Day 8 of Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht! The final weekend is just around the corner, but first: a packed Friday awaits, with a mini-festival in Zuilen, the Early Music Market, and of course, the final of the International Van Wassenaer Competition.

Recap

Yesterday, Jean Rondeau gave his first organ recital featuring music by Louis Couperin, and Vox Luminis performed Part I of the Altbachisches Archiv. In the evening, the musicians of Ensemble Masques, together with acrobat Jef Everaerts, delivered a breathtaking rendition of Rameau’s Pygmalion.

We wish all ensembles the best of luck! You can find the program here. Want to watch the final but not nearby? Follow the free livestream on EMTV.

Artwork of the Day

With the Artwork of the Day we connect a work of art to one of the concert programmes. Sometimes the link is obvious, sometimes surprising or unexpected. Today’s artwork: Der Chasseur im Walde (1814) by Caspar David Friedrich.

The painting shows a small figure: a French hunter wandering, lost, in an overwhelming and dark forest. He appears disoriented, perhaps even threatened by the unpredictability of nature. The painting is characteristic of Romanticism: it’s not the heroic hunter who takes center stage, but rather the experience of someone confronted with the mysterious and infinite powers of the natural world. The forest is not merely a backdrop, but a psychological landscape — a place of silence, fear, and wonder.

This vision aligns closely with Robert Schumann’s piano cycle Waldszenen (1848/49). In nine miniatures, Schumann evokes a journey through the forest, with each piece capturing a different emotional coloring of the environment. The opening piece, Eintritt, portrays the step into a new world, just as Friedrich’s painting shows the transition into the woods. In pieces such as Jäger auf der Lauer and Jagdlied, we hear echoes of the hunt, marking the human presence in nature.

As in the painting, Waldszenen is not about a realistic depiction of nature, but about an inner experience. The listener enters a landscape that symbolizes introspection, existential uncertainty, and the longing to understand something greater than the self. Both artists invite us to see the forest not just as a physical place, but as a mirror of the soul.

Zuilen Day

Today, we're hosting a special mini-festival in the Utrecht district of Zuilen, at the ZIMIHC Theater. The Concert Camper - our mobile concert hall - will be parked right outside from 10:00 hrs. Fringe musicians will also perform a series of concerts inside the theater.

And the cherry on top: the young talents from Muziek in de Wijk have prepared a selection of pieces especially for the festival. Of course, they’ll also play some of their more contemporary hits.

This mini-festival at ZIMIHC Zuilen is free to attend and suitable for all ages. Come by and be surprised!

Early Music Exhibition

Starting at 12:00 hrs, you can visit the Early Music Exhibition. Instrument makers, sheet music publishers, music shops, and booksellers will showcase their treasures in the festival center at TivoliVredenburg.

The market is free to attend and runs until this Sunday. Don’t miss your chance to see (and even try out!) historical musical instruments up close.

Also on the programme today...

… part 2 of the Altbachisches Archiv by Vox Luminis, two more concerts by Jean Rondeau featuring the keyboard works of Louis Couperin, Capriccio Stravagante and Cappella Mariana presenting various versions of Doulce Mémoire, and much more.
