It is common knowledge that the Renaissance began with the rediscovery of ancient Greek and Latin texts in abbeys. Only... that story is not true! The most important Greek scientific and philosophical books were translated into Arabic in Baghdad. There they were endowed with new insights. It is through Latin translations of these Arabic works, via Spain and Seville in particular, that eventually the European Renaissance began.

About the speaker

Koert Debeuf is a historian, philosopher, political analyst, and opinion maker. He previously worked as an advisor and speechwriter for the Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and wrote the book Why This Is Not the Last War. Currently, he is a geopolitical advisor and researcher affiliated with Oxford University and the VUB. Additionally, he is a frequently sought-after expert in domestic and foreign media, where he contextualizes conflict within historical frameworks.
