Free Vesper Chiming & Lecture: The oldest sound of Utrecht
Utrecht's oldest instruments are undoubtedly its bells. The oldest still-sounding bell dates from 1435.
These historical bells hang in several churches, but also other locations, such as a gym and a care institution. The Utrechts Klokkenluiders Gilde manually rings bells at 11 locations in Utrecht. The guild is also a knowledge centre for knowledge about bells, for example at www.klokkenluiders.nl.
Tonight, Arie Noordermeer, bell ringer of the first hour, will first take us upstairs on the Dom Tower for the Vesper chiming on Wednesday evening. You can then enjoy the beautiful view right away. Afterwards, Arie will take us into the world of Utrecht's bells. Which bells does Utrecht have and how old are they? Why does each bell hang where? Do bells have a pitch? Can bells sound out of tune? Are there any newer bells? Can additional bells be made? How are bells hung in a tower? And can they break (and be repaired again?).
In short, a great opportunity for everyone who wants to know more about the history of Utrecht's bells!
