The Spirit of Gambo

William Byrd does not write background music. Sharpen your ears for his gamba consorts: an inextricable partnership of dance and counterpoint. Stiff pavans and galliards are let loose by free fantasies and formidable variations; familiar melodies appear, disappear, and return – just slightly different from before. The Spirit of Gambo exposes this layering with five gambas that challenge, support, and sometimes deliberately work against one another in music that refuses to let go until the final chord.
