General rules and regulations Fringe

The Fringe offers young musicians - those finishing their studies or just starting their careers - a chance to perform in the Utrecht Early Music Festival (23 August - 1 September 2024). Concerts should last ca. 45 minutes. There is free admission for the audience combined with a 'pay what you can' format (pass the hat).

Application for musicians:
We will process the applications of musicians/ensembles who:

  • Perform on historical instruments.
  • Are not older than 33 when the fringe concert takes place (applies to all members of the ensemble).
  • Have properly and completely filled in the application form, including the following:
    • At least 2 good-quality recordings (mp3/mp4) of the performers named in the programme proposals.
    • A pdf document with:
      • A short biography of each performer, including date of birth
      • A photo of the ensemble
      • Two programme proposals and list of personnel


The Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht offers Fringe musicians:

  • At least one performance in the fringe programme at a special festival location.
  • Free access to all festival events after collecting free tickets (unless sold out).
  • Feedback on the fringe concert by a coach from the professional field.
  • Travel reimbursement to and from concert locations up to € 60 per person.
  • Overnight accommodation for musicians who live outside of The Netherlands, at the expense of the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, in Strowis or another partner hostel.
  • Large instruments such as keyboard instruments, timpani and double basses can be provided (after consultation) by the festival.
  • One hour rehearsal time on location or in a rehearsal room on the day of the concert.
  • Support by volunteers on location.
  • Fringe musicians may keep all profits of the 'pay what you want' arrangement at their concert.


Selection procedure:

  • Application deadline: 1 April 2024
  • The selection of Fringe performers is made by the artistic team of the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.
  • All applicants will receive digital confirmation of whether or not they have been accepted for the Fringe. Those who have not been accepted will not receive any individual feedback.
  • The Fringe programme of the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht is put together based on the availability of the chosen ensembles and concert locations.
  • Successful applicants are not allowed to change their programme or personnel after they have been selected. Exceptions can only be made in emergency situations, after consultation with the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.
  • Applicants will be informed no later than 1 June if they are selected for the Fringe 2024.
