Ars Antiqua Austria & St. Florianer Sängerknaben
Once upon a time, Aufschnaiter’s music echoed through the Baroque vaults of Passau Cathedral. Trained in Vienna and active at the imperial court, this Austrian composer developed a distinctive, deeply emotional style full of contrapuntal fireworks and adventurous harmonies.
Ars Antiqua Austria samples the genius of this ‘Catholic Bach’ and his vivid soundscapes. Aufschnaiter’s Missa Laetemurine, rediscovered in the Lambach Abbey, is joined by the Sonata S. Gregori: a tribute to the patron saint of musicians.
For the second half of this diptych, we meet Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber – standard-bearer of Austrian Baroque. A selection of resplendent court music, including a vesper with 32 parts – led by Gunar Letzbor and the children’s choir of the Sankt Florian Abbey!
