La Fonte Musica

Artist in residence La Fonte Musica reconstructs the premiere of Monteverdi’s Combattimento in 1624 – an evening about which the composer himself left valuable clues. First: madrigals sung ‘without any gesture’. Then: Clorinda who enters the space and unleashes the dramatic duel. In a concert like a sound séance, Michele Pasotti and his companions dream of what Monteverdi had in mind: static polyphony bursting at the seams and transforming into vibrant music theatre – the shock of the early Baroque!

About the performers

The ensemble La Fonte Musica was founded by Michele Pasotti and specializes in the interpretation of late medieval music, with special focus on the Italian Trecento. A vital element in this is philological research, which involves returning to the roots of medieval polyphony, exploring the deeper meaning of the texts and the musical choices present in the compositions. The name of the ensemble alludes to the fountain, a topos in medieval poetry, a place of regeneration and life, and a symbol of pleasure. La Fonte Music is artist in residence during Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2025.
