Ricercar Consort
In the early 17th century, the Thirty Years' War ravaged Central Europe with unprecedented violence. In the midst of these horrors, Heinrich Schütz wrote music that echoed the prayers of the tormented population and became a balm for the soul for everyone ‘in great fear and danger.’ Philippe Pierlot presents the most beautiful works from this moving repertoire with a star cast of singers and instrumentalists.
From extensive concertos to subdued motets, Schütz's compositions – here with instrumental punctuation by Johann Hermann Schein – exude the deep longing for a just and lasting peace. The music and its plea (‘Da pacem’ or ‘Give peace’) have lost none of their power and relevance: comforting beauty feeds unity, hope and resilience.
