Tiburtina Ensemble & Oltremontano Antwerpen

Gathered for a huge, true-to-life reproduction of the altarpiece God the Father with Music-making Angels, Tiburtina Ensemble and Oltremontano breathe new life into Hans Memling’s imagination of 15th-century musical practices. For this special project, historical instruments were recreated exactly as depicted by the Bruges master. Gregorian chants and polyphony from late medieval Flemish sources form a portal to Memling’s vision of paradise: a living sound tableau that stimulates all the senses.

About the performers

Tiburtina Ensemble is based in Prague and directed by Barbora Kabátková. The group of female vocalists was formed in 2008 by former members of the Schola Benedicta. Tiburtina Ensemble’s repertoire mainly consists of Gregorian chant and medieval polyphony. The ensemble is particularly focused on accurate text declamation, grounding their approach in research into contemporary theory and musical practice.

Oltremontano Antwerpen, directed by Wim Becu, specializes in alta capella music of the 15th and 16th centuries, featuring cornetts, trombones, and double-reed instruments. The ensemble’s name refers to the Flemish polyphonists who shaped the European musical style. With a vocal playing style and thorough source research, Oltremontano brings to life both masterpieces by Gabrieli, Praetorius, and Monteverdi, and hidden gems by lesser-known composers like Lambert de Sayve.
