Bell lecture
For anyone who would like to learn a little more about Utrecht’s oldest instruments, Arie Noordermeer is giving a lecture on the ‘Bells of Utrecht’. Since when have there been bells in Utrecht? Which is the oldest? What is the significance of ringing the bell? Are there different types of bells? How did people get such a heavy instrument to the top of a tower? Do bells ever change places, and why? Do all the bells sound in unison, or can it sound ‘out of tune’? Why does the UKG ring the bells manually? This lecture is your chance to boost your knowledge of Utrecht’s bells. The lecture is combined with the weekly Vespers ringing (at 18:45), so you can actually see and hear the bells and bell ringers in action.
