Gabrieli Consort & Players

Coronation in Venice, 1595
Channels, gondolas, masks and power. Imagine Venice in 1595. In St Marks Basilica, Marino Grimani is crowned as doge, the head of state of the Venetian Republic. This festive and luxurious occasion asked for music in which religion, politics and art merged seamlessly. During this coronation, stately toccatas and canzonas by Bendinelli and Giovanni Gabrieli alternate with a solemn Mass by Andrea Gabrieli. We hear and feel sound from every corner: choirs and instrumental ensembles pursue one another in a spatial game of call and response. This coronation was, after all, a total experience – designed to impress, to move and to persuade. In other words: this is not a concert, but a sonic explosion.
