Música Temprana
Shepherds at the Spanish Court
It was a remarkable trend in Renaissance Castile: the nobility's longing for an idyllic rural life. Even though their manicured gardens were miles away from ploughs and sheepskin, the nobility fell head over heels for the villancicos (‘village songs’) that glorified the art of pastoral idleness. Música Temprana draws on the work of Juan del Encina and Mateo Flecha, bringing rebec, recorder, vihuela and viol into play for the ultimate pastoral utopia.
