The Early Music Museum Lectures
Heritage and Performing Arts in Politically Turbulent Times
Prof. Paul Schnabel is a sociologist, politician, former director of the Social and Cultural Planning Office, author of a beautiful book about unknown Dutch masters from the 17th century and... a great lover of countertenors! He sheds light on the political positioning of material heritage vs. the performing arts. The impression prevails that heritage – such as buildings and paintings – can count on support from the conservative corner and the radical right, while the performing arts are portrayed as a left-wing hobby. Is this image correct? Do we see this reflected in policy, nationally and internationally? And what does this mean for the support base of the arts now and in the future?
