Ensemble Correspondances

Mühlhausen, 1707. During his short stay in the city, the 22-year-old Bach wrote his first and perhaps most beloved cantatas. The Actus Tragicus (Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit), Christ lag in Todesbanden and Aus der Tiefe are all about life, farewells and what comes after. The writing is light and direct. Few pieces of music are as comforting as these three gems. Ensemble Correspondances delves into the world of the brilliant young Bach, in which the DNA of the mature oeuvre already slumbers.

About the performers

When, back in 2008, harpsichordist/organ player Sébastien Daucé gathered fellow-students of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon around him, Ensemble Correspondances was born. A dedicated collaboration blossomed to unearth rare and neglected musical treasures, revealing a wide range of emotions and expressions. Since its formation the group has devoted itself chiefly to French sacred music of the 17th century, with a special focus on Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Its recordings (Harmonia Mundi) have won some of the most prestigious classical music awards, such as Choc de l’année 2014 (Classica), the Echo for World Premiere Recording of the Year 2016 and the Diapason d’Or de l’année 2018.
