Lecture Mimi Mitchell

About the lecture:

What kind of music are the hundreds of pieces in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and do they need to be played on a virginal? What does English consort music sound like and how has the style changed over the centuries? How do language and music come together in Purcell's The Fairy-Queen? And did you know that this semi-opera was written to mark the fifteenth wedding anniversary of Willem and Mary, a fine moment of Dutch and English solidarity?

In this lecture, musicologist and violinist Mimi Mitchell explores the English music scene of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with a specific look at the music on the programme during the Day of the English Baroque. The historical background, images from this period and music excerpts by various composers will help us appreciate the changing ‘English style’ and put our finger on what makes this music English.
