William Byrd and Thomas Tallis may top the charts of Tudor composers, but Robert White and William Mundy deserve equal renown. All four lived through a time when England was torn between loyalty to Catholic Rome and an increasingly prominent Protestant nationalism. The British polyphony specialists of Tenebrae unveil the spiritual persuasiveness of Mundy and White's motets, a mass by Byrd and Tallis's moving anthem If ye love me.
